Kankakee County Housing Authority Breaks Ground on Wildwood Residences to Expand Affordable Senior Housing.

New $18.3 million development will provide 40 modern, affordable homes for seniors aged 62 and older in Kankakee

United States, 7th Jul 2026 — The Kankakee County Housing Authority (KCHA) has announced the start of construction on Wildwood Residences, a new affordable housing community designed to provide high-quality homes for seniors aged 62 and older. The approximately $18.3 million development represents a significant investment in expanding housing opportunities for older adults while supporting the long-term housing needs of the Kankakee community.

The new development will be located at 300 North Wildwood Avenue on the site of existing public housing owned by the Kankakee County Housing Authority. Once completed, Wildwood Residences will feature 40 affordable rental homes across thoughtfully designed duplex and triplex buildings, offering residents modern living spaces in a neighborhood that provides convenient access to essential community services.

The community will include 30 one-bedroom apartments and 10 two-bedroom apartments, providing housing options tailored to the needs of seniors seeking independent, affordable living. Every residence has been designed with comfort, accessibility, and long-term livability in mind.

Wildwood Residences will incorporate a variety of modern amenities intended to enhance residents’ quality of life. Each home will include in-unit washers and dryers, granite countertops, soft-close cabinetry, ceiling fans, and energy-efficient building features. Outdoor amenities will include walking paths, picnic areas, and community garden parcels, creating opportunities for recreation, relaxation, and social interaction.

The project has been planned to achieve LEED green building certification, reflecting KCHA’s commitment to environmentally responsible construction and long-term sustainability. The development will also include accessible and adaptable units to better serve seniors with varying mobility and accessibility needs.

Wildwood Residences has been structured to provide long-term housing stability for its future residents. All 40 apartments will be supported through a new 20-year Project-Based Voucher contract with the Kankakee County Housing Authority, helping ensure that affordable housing remains available for eligible seniors well into the future.

Located within walking distance of public transportation, a post office, and neighborhood retail services, the development offers residents convenient access to everyday necessities while allowing them to remain connected to the surrounding community.

The project is being developed through a collaborative partnership involving the Kankakee County Housing Authority, Wildwood Senior Residences, LP, the Kankakee County Housing Development Corporation, and AHDVS, LLC. Construction will be led by Heritage Development and Construction, with architectural design provided by Farr Associates. Financing includes support through the Illinois Housing Development Authority’s 2026 and 2027 Low-Income Housing Tax Credit programs along with additional public and private investment partners.

Executive Director Joseph Anderson said the project reflects KCHA’s continued commitment to meeting the changing housing needs of older residents while investing in the future of the community.

“Wildwood Residences represents an important step forward in expanding quality, affordable housing opportunities for seniors in Kankakee County,” Anderson said. “This development will provide safe, modern homes where older adults can live independently while remaining connected to the community they call home.”

Construction is expected to move forward following the project’s financing approvals, with Wildwood Residences becoming one of the community’s newest affordable senior housing developments. The investment supports KCHA’s broader mission of improving housing opportunities while helping strengthen neighborhoods through thoughtfully planned residential communities.

As demand for affordable senior housing continues to grow across Illinois, Wildwood Residences is expected to play an important role in providing stable housing options that promote independence, accessibility, and long-term community well-being for local seniors.
