AUTHOR PAUL ARATA RELEASES SERIOUS ROOMMATE PROBLEMS, A REAL-LIFE LOVE STORY WRITTEN IN A DESPERATE ATTEMPT TO SAVE HIS MARRIAGE

Brooklyn-set romance launches a two-part series born from one man’s race against time to win back the woman he loves.

United States, 20th May 2026 – Serious Roommate Problems is a story based on real-life events written by Paul Arata as a desperate attempt to save his marriage when his wife started screaming, “Why should I even try when you never loved me, and that’s all that really matters,” at the marriage counselor’s office. After watching his wife run away from the counseling session, saying that their marriage was over, and having the counselor say “Let her go,” Paul Arata is convinced that he must write to her to reinstate the passion of their relationship.

He finds the short story he previously wrote in a writing class at New York University, describing how he first met her at a bar in Brooklyn, where his opening line to her was that he was having some serious roommate problems. He continues writing the story from there, describing how he fell in love with Holly while his roommate’s problems continued to get more ridiculous every day.

The result is Serious Roommate Problems, the first book in a planned two-part romantic comedy series published by Hambone US. The 330-pages novel is available now in hardcover, softcover, and eBook formats.

Set in the vibrant and gritty Brooklyn of 1992, the novel follows Pete Dominico, an aspiring writer living in the historically Black neighborhood of Fort Greene. Pete is chasing his New York dream of becoming a playwright while paying the bills as a magazine ad salesman. His apartment situation grows increasingly chaotic when his charismatic Jamaican roommate Clarence moves downstairs with his new French bride and installs a difficult new tenant upstairs.

As the dispute between the two roommates escalates from cold silence to open hostility, Pete walks into a Park Slope bar and meets Holly, a free-spirited nanny from Oregon who is escaping her own small-town past. What begins as a casual fling against the clock of Holly’s planned move to San Francisco becomes something deeper as the two explore the city together. Pete falls for Holly’s warmth, her sense of adventure, and her gift for finding beauty in everyday moments.

“I started writing because I was running out of time,” said Arata. “The counselor told me to let her go. I refused. I sat down at my computer that same night and started writing the story of how we first fell in love, because I had to remind her, and maybe remind myself, what we had built together.”

The novel weaves the blossoming romance through a richly drawn cultural landscape: the jazz clubs of the Village, the brownstones of Park Slope, the basketball courts of Fort Greene, and the colorful cast of characters who populate Pete’s world. Throughout the book, Arata returns to the present-day Oregon timeline, where Pete continues writing with the clock ticking on his marriage.

Serious Roommate Problems explores the spark of attraction, the chemistry that draws two people together, and the often vastly different ways men and women understand love and commitment. The story carries the urgency of a man writing for his marriage, and the honesty of a writer drawing directly from his own life. This raw male perspective is refreshing to see in the romantic comedy genre, which is dominated by female writers.
