Texas Home Generator Sales Jump 150% Following Grid Challenges

Texas home standby generator installations have surged 150% year-over-year, with the state now representing 22% of national residential backup power sales according to Generac Power Systems reports. The unprecedented growth follows grid reliability challenges, with Texas customers experiencing an average 26.3 hours without power in 2024.”We’re getting dozens and dozens of calls about generators,” said James Adams, Master Electrician at ABR Electric, an authorized Generac dealer serving the Dallas-Fort Worth area. “People aren’t just thinking about backup power as nice-to-have anymore. They’re looking at it as essential infrastructure.”

McKinney, Texas, United States, 15th Dec 2025 – The home standby generator market is experiencing unprecedented growth across Texas, with installations increasing 150% year-over-year according to Generac Power Systems’ latest quarterly reports. Local electrical contractors throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex report similar surges in demand as homeowners reassess their relationship with grid reliability. “We’re getting dozens and dozens of calls about generators,” said James Adams, Master Electrician and owner of ABR Electric, an authorized Generac dealer serving Collin County and the broader DFW area. “The difference now is people aren’t just thinking about backup power as a nice-to-have anymore.

They’re looking at it as essential infrastructure.” According to industry data, Generac reported record residential product sales of $1.8 billion in Q4 2024, representing a 47% increase over the prior year. Texas now represents 22% of total U.S. residential backup power sales, up from just 9% in 2021 before historic winter storms exposed grid vulnerabilities. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports that Texas customers experienced an average of 26.3 hours without power in 2024, significantly above the national average of 18.7 hours when major weather events are included. “Most people say it won’t happen again, but when it does happen and your power is out for more than an hour or two, it sucks,” Adams noted during a recent technical discussion on generator installations.

His experience reflects broader industry trends, as the Rocky Mountain Institute found that Texas homeowners who installed whole-home backup systems achieved payback periods averaging 7-9 years when accounting for avoided losses and maintained productivity. Installation Capacity Becomes Market Bottleneck Despite record equipment demand, the National Electrical Contractors Association estimates that installer capacity lags demand by approximately 40%, with wait times extending 8-12 weeks in high-demand markets. Local contractors including ABR Electric report backlogs extending into Q2 2025. “There’s no manufacturer that has the kind of support for maintenance and warranty issues like Generac. That combination makes them the right choice when you’re talking about something you’ll have for decades,” Adams noted.

The installation complexity has also evolved with new National Electrical Code requirements. Recent code cycles now require generators to either handle 100% of a home’s electrical load or incorporate automatic load management systems. “The code now says I need to document in a load calc sheet if I’m leaving some of these bigger loads off, not rely on the homeowner to shut things off,” Adams explained. “The intent is that when the power outage happens and you have a double oven going and the dryer going at night, if there’s more draw than the generator can support, your generator won’t start.”

As extreme weather events continue and grid modernization efforts lag demand growth, industry analysts project the distributed energy trend will accelerate, fundamentally reshaping residential power infrastructure throughout Texas and beyond.

ABR Electric provides residential electrical services throughout Collin County and the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, specializing in whole-home backup power systems, transfer switch installations, and electrical panel upgrades.
