ShelterBaby Announces Pet Wellness Innovation and Mission-Led Product Expansion

Emerging pet wellness brand ShelterBaby gains recognition for its science-inspired products and grassroots mission as it prepares to broaden its offerings.

United States, 30th Jun 2025 – When Zhenya Villarreal founded ShelterBaby in late 2024, the startup launched without external funding or a traditional promotional rollout. What began with two rescued dogs and a kitchen stocked with skincare-grade ingredients has grown into a steadily expanding brand focused on supporting the everyday issues that affect pet wellbeing—especially those linked to behavioral and dermatological concerns.

“We didn’t want to just sell cute bottles,” Villarreal said. “We wanted to solve the real issues that send dogs back to shelters—starting with behavior and skin health.”

The approach was informed by her personal experiences as a shelter volunteer, where Villarreal saw that dogs were often surrendered not necessarily due to lack of care, but because families lacked access to resources or knowledge to manage ongoing behavioral or health-related challenges.

First Formulas Rooted in Observed Needs

ShelterBaby’s debut product was a dry coat care powder intended for dogs exhibiting signs of skin discomfort such as itchiness and allergies. Rather than replicate existing market offerings, the formulation incorporated ingredients common in advanced human skincare, including astaxanthin, a naturally occurring antioxidant, and probiotics known to support skin microbiome health. The company focused on using minimal, recognizable components—avoiding synthetic fillers in favor of what Villarreal describes as “functional and purposeful inclusions.”

This method aligned with her broader goal of designing solutions that reflect observed animal responses and practical household needs, rather than following trends or generalized consumer demands.

Reimagining Support for Canine Anxiety

Following the coat care line, ShelterBaby introduced a calming supplement originally developed for Villarreal’s own dog, Beetlejuice. The product, which is formulated with ingredients associated with supporting neurological and immune system function, is presented as a daily aid designed to promote a sense of balance in dogs experiencing situational stress or behavioral tension.

“It’s not meant to sedate,” Villarreal noted. “Think of it more as a supportive routine that encourages emotional steadiness over time.”

ShelterBaby has offered early samples of the calming aid for use in select shelter settings, with the intent of supporting dogs during adoption visits. A longtime customer, whose Swiss shepherd Eva uses the product as part of a routine to help manage separation-related restlessness and occasional inter-dog tension, represents the kind of anecdotal response ShelterBaby considers when evaluating product impact.

Transparency as a Brand Philosophy

ShelterBaby has adopted a low-profile but transparent approach to growth. Without investor backing, the brand has emphasized first-hand testing and open communication about ingredients and production. Villarreal frequently demonstrates product usage and palatability on social media, including ingesting formulations to underscore their safety for human handling—a practice reflecting the company’s decision to use only human-grade, organic ingredients.

Though anecdotal in nature, this openness has contributed to a sense of trust among early adopters, and fostered attention from pet wellness advocates. Influential voices in the space, such as pet influencers like @booplethesnoot, have organically endorsed ShelterBaby’s products—amplifying the brand’s reach through personal testimonials rather than sponsored partnerships.

Industry Recognition and Measured Growth

Despite its modest beginnings, ShelterBaby was awarded the 2024 Pet Innovation Award for Best Bath Product, joining a list of established recipients that includes Zesty Paws and Pet Honesty. Its dry shampoo also earned independent rankings in multiple 2025 review roundups, based on publicly available user feedback and editor evaluations.

ShelterBaby’s contract manufacturer, which also serves several high-output pet brands, presented the company with a “Product Innovation of the Year” award under the umbrella of Taysab LLC—acknowledging the brand’s differentiated approach in a competitive space.

Expanding Thoughtfully Across Species

ShelterBaby’s expansion model prioritizes relevance and familiarity. Future product lines are in development for rabbits, parrots, and horses—animals Villarreal and her family personally care for. Each formulation is introduced only when a practical, observed need emerges, rather than in response to market trends or seasonal demand spikes.

“We only launch products for animals we live with and care for,” Villarreal said. “If we don’t need it, we don’t make it.”
