International Women Flag Football Association IWFFA Continues Support for Afghan Refugees

United States, 23rd Jul 2025 – The International Women’s Flag Football Association (IWFFA), in collaboration with the Winnipeg Women’s Flag Football League, proudly hosted a Friendship Game on July 6, 2025, in Winnipeg, Canada. The one-day tournament featured two teams: Prairie Storm 2nd from Winnipeg and a visiting team from Toronto, made up entirely of refugee women introduced to the sport through IWFFA outreach. The event capped off a week of flag football clinics held from June 28 to July 4, focused on skill-building, empowerment, and creating community through sport. IWFFA President Diane Beruldsen personally trained the Toronto team before traveling with them to Winnipeg, where she also served as the referee for the game. Her leadership exemplifies the IWFFA’s mission to grow the sport globally, utilizing it as a tool for inclusion and personal growth. “This game wasn’t just about football,” said Beruldsen. “It was about giving women a voice, a space, and a sisterhood they can belong to on and off the field.” The Friendship Game was a powerful display of unity, resilience, and cultural connection through sport.

“ You must understand also, that these Afghan flag football players were the group of women IWFFA, with the partnership of ALDEA & Mexico Greenberg Traurig law firms got asylum to Mexico in 2022. These women have uprooted their lives from the terrible Taliban who took over their country Afghanistan in August of 2021.
