A New Christmas Tradition Is Born As Nigeria Unveils Its First Indigenous Fabric Christmas Tree

On December 24, 2025, Lagos will host the debut of A Shakara Christmas, a landmark cultural celebration by Shakara Trybe. At its heart is Nigeria’s first Christmas tree made entirely from indigenous fabrics donated by Nigerians nationwide

Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria, 16th Dec 2025 – On December 24, 2025, Lagos will witness the birth of a new Christmas tradition. Shakara Trybe, the African fashion brand and cultural community, presents A Shakara Christmas, featuring Nigeria’s first ever Christmas tree constructed entirely from indigenous fabrics donated by Nigerians across the country.

The monumental installation will stand at the JK Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture & History on Lagos Island, where hundreds of fabrics representing tribes, families, and personal stories from across Nigeria have been woven together into a breathtaking symbol of national unity. Each piece of cloth carries memory and meaning. Aso Oke from Yoruba ceremonies, Akwete from Eastern celebrations, hand-woven textiles from Northern communities. Together, they form something Nigeria has never seen before: a Christmas tree that tells our collective Christmas stories.

Creative Director and Founder of Shakara Trybe; Ebunoluwa Dosumu, envisioned this project as a celebration of three powerful themes: unity, sustainability, and community. The tree represents unity in diversity, showing how different fabrics from different cultures can create one stunning work of art. It champions sustainability by giving beloved textiles a second life instead of letting them gather dust or go to waste. Most importantly, it creates community by bringing people together during a season when many feel isolated from family and tradition.

“A Shakara Christmas is our gift to the city, a reminder that no matter where life has taken us, we can still come home to each other,” says Ebunoluwa Dosumu. “This tree is built from fabrics that carry our mothers’ laughter, our fathers’ journeys, and our own memories. We are stitching our stories into one light, one community, and one unforgettable Christmas in Lagos.”

The Christmas Eve celebration recreates the warmth of a traditional Nigerian Christmas. Families, young adults, creatives, diplomats, tourists, and culture enthusiasts are invited to experience live performances by the Loud Urban Choir, cultural dance ensembles, spoken word by IB Quake, and fashion showcases. The event features a Christmas food village with Nigerian and holiday cuisines, children’s activities, heritage storytelling, photo installations, and nostalgic games that bring back the joy of childhood Christmases.

The centerpiece of the evening will be the tree lighting ceremony, an emotional moment where the fabric installation illuminates for the first time. Attendees will also experience the “Trash to Treasure” sustainability exhibit, showing the transformation of old fabrics into monumental art, and the Wall of Fame, which displays photos and stories of those who contributed their textiles to this historic project.

Shakara Trybe has built a reputation for celebrating Nigerian identity through fashion. Nominated for Emerging Fashion Brand of the Year at the 2024 Icon Noble Awards, the brand has showcased at The African Prints Festival in Adelaide and Africa Creative Market, earning features in major publications across Nigeria and Brazil. Their collections have consistently reimagined traditional fabrics like Aso Oke and Owambe lace for contemporary wear, and now they are creating something even bigger: a new Lagos Christmas landmark rooted in African identity.

A Shakara Christmas is family-friendly and open to everyone. Whether coming with family, friends, or solo, there is space for all who want to witness this historic moment and celebrate Christmas through a distinctly Nigerian lens.
