Summer Okibe, a dedicated Climate and Energy Policy Leader, is a force for global change. With over eight years of experience, Summer Okibe has emerged as a respected leader, shaping policy and amplifying youth voices at some of the most significant global platforms for climate action, including the United Nations and the World Bank Group Youth Summit.
As the Energy Governance & Policy Coordinator of the YOUNGO Energy Working Group at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Summer’s focus lies at the intersection of intergenerational equity reforms and strengthening youth capacities in energy and climate policy spaces. Her leadership continues to inspire young activists and policymakers worldwide, while also guiding transformative change toward more inclusive and sustainable global energy systems.
Global Recognition and Unstoppable Advocacy
Throughout her career, Summer has gained recognition for her leadership in energy and climate policy, winning over $400,000 in scholarships and achieving notable awards such as the prestigious Flight 302 Legacy Award in 2025. Among her achievements are being named one of the JCI Top 100 Outstanding Young Persons of Nigeria (2022) and being recognized as the Best Associate at Greenfield Chambers (2020). Summer’s dedication to advancing climate justice extends beyond her career and is embedded in her work as a mentor and educator.
“Every time I attend a UN event or teach a policy class, I carry my entire village with me. I am proof that you can start from anywhere and still touch everywhere,” says Summer.
Her ability to bridge academia with grassroots action has created a ripple effect across Africa and the globe, as she mentors over 2,000 young Africans in securing fully funded scholarships, academic opportunities, and leadership positions.
The 5-Minute Climergy Feud: Changing the Climate Conversation
Summer’s entrepreneurial spirit is embodied in the 5-Minute Climergy Feud, a fast-paced, youth-led policy show designed to simplify climate concepts through debate and collaboration. The initiative brings together young people from diverse backgrounds, igniting curiosity, fostering collaboration, and nurturing practical climate advocacy. Through this program, Summer has created a space for young people to understand the complexities of climate policy while actively engaging in shaping solutions.
Commitment to Education and Gender Equity
As a trained policy expert, Summer’s work focuses heavily on creating opportunities for marginalized groups. Her dedication to advancing education for children and youth is reflected in her leadership of the “To Support Young Kids Foundation,” which has funded scholarships and grants for over 10,000 children and youth in Nigeria. Through these efforts, she has made education accessible to those who need it the most, while also advocating for the empowerment of women and indigenous peoples.
“For me, climate justice isn’t just policy; it’s personal. It’s my story. It’s my people. It’s the future of the school I’m building with my own hands,” says Okibe.

Summer Okibe is a recognized young rising leader in climate and energy policy, currently completing her Ph.D. in Law, focusing on climate, environmental, and indigenous issues at the University of Victoria, Canada.
