A Simple Story with a Smart Purpose: Denise Johnson Brings Early Learning to Life in Dusty Counts to Ten and Back Again
Buffalo, United States, 7th May 2026 – Most children learn to count by memorizing numbers. Very few actually understand what those numbers mean. Denise Johnson saw that gap clearly and decided to fix it in the most practical way possible, through story.

Her new children’s book, Dusty Counts to Ten and Back Again, takes a real-life moment and turns it into something useful, engaging, and quietly powerful for early learners.
At the center of the story is Dusty, a pit bull with an unusual habit. Instead of rushing through her treats, she carefully arranges them, creating a moment that becomes the foundation for learning numbers in a way that actually makes sense to a child.
This is not just another counting book. It addresses a problem most parents and educators overlook. Children can recite numbers, but they often fail to connect those numbers to real quantities. That gap shows up later in math struggles, and by then it is harder to fix.
Johnson tackles that issue early.
Written in a rhythmic, easy-to-follow style, the book blends storytelling with learning mechanics. It uses repetition, sight words, and simple structure to help children build both literacy and number sense simultaneously.
Denise Johnson is not guessing what works. She has been teaching elementary students since 2003 and understands exactly where children struggle and why. With a background in economics and childhood studies from Rutgers University, she brings both structure and classroom experience into her writing.
“I didn’t want to create another book children just memorize,” Johnson explains. “I wanted something that helps them actually understand what they are learning.”
That’s the difference.
Instead of abstract teaching, Dusty Counts to Ten and Back Again connects learning to behavior, observation, and curiosity. It makes numbers feel real. It gives parents and teachers a tool that works without feeling like a lesson.
And that matters because early learning shapes most long-term academic outcomes.
This book is built for:
-
Parents who want their children to grasp concepts, not just repeat them
-
Teachers looking for simple, effective classroom tools
-
Early readers who learn better through rhythm and storytelling
There’s no gimmick here. Just a clear idea executed properly.
And that’s exactly why it stands out.
