From Scrap Metal to Success: Building a New Life and Brand

Starting with scrap metal collection during difficult times, he built Bubba’s Scrap Removal through persistence, personal change, and reinvestment. Motivated by family and responsibility, he grew the business from nothing into a successful company generating over half a million dollars annually.

Pearland, TX, United States, 17th Feb 2026 – It all started back in my late twenties. At that point in my life, I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do. I dabbled in a little bit of everything, but I was always drawn back to manual labor jobs. That didn’t really bother me, but I knew I wanted more out of life. After a series of dead-end jobs, or just outright quitting, I stumbled upon storm cleanup work. Storm cleanup jobs pay very well, but they do not last very long—sometimes a couple of years, but most of the time only six to seven months. Still, I really enjoyed the work.

One of my friends, Daniel Holden, introduced me to one of his family members, JD Mulford. I worked for JD, then for his brother, and eventually for a bigger company. I stayed with that larger company, DTS (Daniel’s Tree Service), for what I believe was a couple of years. But once again, when the storm work was finished, I found myself back at square one—looking for a job and unsure of what direction to take next.

So I returned to my hometown of Pearland, Texas, not really sure what I was going to do. Around that time, my oldest sister, Krystal Moreno, had been in a bad accident and wasn’t able to work. We decided to team up and started driving around on trash days picking up scrap metal. At first, we would make about $20–30 each after putting fuel back into my sister’s truck. Over time, I picked up an old computer, printer, and some paper, so I started making flyers. That’s when Bubba’s Scrap Removal was born.

The flyers worked for a while, but they were not very professional. I also didn’t want to spend money on advertising because, at the time, I was struggling with alcoholism and would drink beer every night before bed. My priorities were clearly off, and I wasn’t making the best decisions for my future.

Fast forward about a year. I was on probation for a DWI and had no driver’s license, insurance, inspection sticker, and my tags were expired. Every once in a while, I would still go to local bars for drinks. One night, my friend Big Bill Rustin kept texting me, wanting me to come to his birthday party at a local bar. I really didn’t want to go, but I went anyway. That night changed my life forever—it was the night I met my soon-to-be wife.

Meeting someone when you aren’t actively looking, especially during a chaotic period in your life, isn’t easy. You feel ready to settle down, but you don’t know how. Meeting her forced me to start making real changes. I wanted more out of life, not just for myself but for the family I hoped to build. We eventually had a baby girl, and around that same time, I began seriously organizing my affairs to start my business.

To be honest, I didn’t even realize at first that I was building a business. I just knew I was onto something. I created a website and started charging clients to remove unwanted junk. In the beginning, I hauled off scrap metal for free. Eventually, I started getting paid for junk removal. As money started coming in, I reinvested it into better equipment—trucks, trailers, and tools. Those were some of the happiest and hardest times of my life. I had a new relationship, a new baby, and a new “business” all at once.

Things were finally looking up, even though they weren’t exactly where I wanted them to be yet. I kept pushing forward, gaining traction on Google and building a presence on social media. At one point, I had five employees, including my wife and myself. Today, we generate over half a million dollars a year and continue to grow steadily. Looking back, it’s hard to believe that something that started with picking up scrap metal on trash day turned into a successful company—and a completely new life.
